Can't use CE with DarkSouls 2?

I have used cheat engine and other variable hacking programs in the past, mostly successfully. However with darksouls 2 I cannot get it to work.

The main thing I am concentrating on is cheating for souls so I can test builds but when I go into CE and find the Soul variable and change it it will change back automatically. If I click the loop button in CE the game infinitely adds X souls then takes them away again. Is something blocking it or do I just suck?

There are 3-4 soul addresses, only the last one you need to change.
